Group Therapy

1451100710You are not alone!

Do you ever feel alone in what you’re going through? Or perhaps you think you are the only one feeling this way. More than likely, it will surprise you to know that many others relate to life in the same way.

Dealing with hardships and life’s challenges alone can be a heavy task, especially if you think you are the only one facing such challenges to do so alone. Group therapy offers a unique dynamic and a circle of support amongst individuals who share your concerns.

Group therapy is a dedicated time to process, engage, and enhance personal insight toward a specific issue.

Working in a group allows one to look at behavioral and emotional patterns, deal with traumas, set goals, be heard, and learn coping skills.

How does group therapy work?

An experienced psychotherapist helps facilitate group sessions as you work toward your relational and personal goals in the topic you want to address. Alongside you will be a number (3-10 persons) of individuals who also have some relationship in the same area.

The group will meet weekly for 60-90 minutes, where each member can share personal experiences in a safe and confidential space. In this space, you will also hear stories of others and how they are navigating the same issue. Receiving supportive feedback, feeling listened to, and feeling more comfortable sharing more confidently and openly can occur.

Group therapy can offer new ways to cope with and perceive your concerns. Having open conversations can help to ease your emotions through a variety of strategies and therapeutic modalities. Working in the group encourages and values supportive sharing and honest feedback within its environment, which significantly benefits the healing process.

Some individuals attend group therapy as an additional support network to individual therapy, and some individuals solely attend group sessions.

Before you begin group therapy, the facilitating psychotherapist will meet with you for a consultation to discuss your personal needs and goals. Identifying a group that creates a sense of community and belonging is essential, and where you know you are not alone.

Some groups follow a specific theme depending on the topic. In contrast, others may be less structured, allowing the group’s direction to occur naturally through the conversations in the group.

The facilitating psychotherapist will share and create group rules during the first session to ensure confidentiality, safety, and respect within the group setting.
